Best deals in the April sales revealed by Which?

Are you after a new laptop, TV or fridge freezer? We’ve found decent discounts on tech, home electricals and kitchen appliances for April.

This deals round-up only features products we’ve rigorously tested in our labs – we never recommend ‘deals’ on duds.

Our tests are objective and reflect how things are used in real life, so you can trust the accuracy of our reviews: read them before you buy.

Best TV deal

Samsung QE50Q80CATXXU

• 50-inch 4K TV
• QLED display
• Supports HDR10, HLG and HDR10+ formats

We like: The balanced colours

We don't like: The smart menu looks cluttered

This is one of Samsung's cheaper 50-inch 4K Smart TVs. The 4K HDR has a vivacity of colours and precision in the detail and it's an easy piece of tech to set up and use. Bixby, Google Assistant and Alexa make up a comprehensive list of supported voice assistants.

Some of Samsung's recent QLED models have been a bit let down by weak sound, but we've also seen some successes.

Best mobile phone deal

Motorola Moto g84 5G

• Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 5G chipset
• 6.5-inch screen
• Two rear cameras with flash

We like: It's easy to use

We don’t like: Limited camera abilities

Released in September 2023, the Motorola Moto g84 5G was already reasonably price. But now you can get it for even less.

It has a thin and stylish design and holds a 6.5-inch screen with 2,400 x 1,080 resolution. The storage is generous at 256GB and you can add to this using an SD card. With 5G, it has future-proof connection and is fuelled by a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with 12GB of Ram.

Best laptop deal

Samsung Galaxy Book 2

• 256GB SSD
• 8GB Ram
• 15.5-inch screen

We like: The large screen

We don't like: The build quality - it feels a bit flimsy

The Samsung Galaxy Book 2 has a large, 15.5-inch Full HD display, 8GB of Ram, 256GB solid-state drive and Dolby Atmos-branded sound.

Most laptops over 15 inches are best suited to home use but the Galaxy Book 2 is slim (17.5mm) and light (1.54kg) enough to be taken out for the occasional jaunt or moved easily from room to room.

The model we tested had an Intel Core i3 processor, but the one we've found on offer has an even better i5 processor.

Best MacBook deal

Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (2020)

• Apple M1 processor
• 8GB Ram 
• 256GB storage

We like: It's thin and light

We don’t like: There aren't many ports

The MacBook Air is thinner, lighter and cheaper than the MacBook Pro, but it also has a smaller battery and no cooling fan to keep the processor performing at its best when working full pelt on intensive tasks.

The thing that really stands out is just how portable this 13-inch 2020 MacBook Air is, weighing in at less than 1.3kg.

Specifications-wise, there’s an Apple M1 processor on board, 8GB of Ram and 256GB of SSD storage, meaning it should be fast enough for most day-to-day tasks. And the 2,560x1,600 screen is the same pin-sharp resolution as the 2020 MacBook Pro.

Best tablet deal

Lenovo Tab M9

• 8.9-inch screen
• 3GB of Ram
• 32GB of storage

We like: It runs quickly

We didn't like: The hard drive is small so you'll probably need to buy a micro-SD card

There are strong contenders at the entry-level end of tablets, with Samsung and Amazon releasing solid options. It means tablets like this M9 need to be good to compete. 

It doesn't have the best specs on paper, but that doesn't always tell the whole story – which is why we leave no stone unturned when testing every tablet.

Best headphones deal

JBL Tour Pro 2

• Truly wireless, in-ear headphones
• Active noise cancelling
• Display screen on charging case

We Like: The display on the charging case helps you find lost earbuds

We don’t like: The subpar microphone

These headphones are the current flagship in-ear model from JBL.

Uniquely, the charging case has a display which has a number of uses.

Various voice assistants are supported, including Alexa, and it has a water resistance rating of IPX5 (this means they have a high level of protection from water, but can’t be fully submerged).

Best fridge freezer deal

Bosch KGN39VXBT

• Freestanding
• Frost-free freezer
• Black-steel

We like: It's easy to use and clean

We don’t like: The fridge could be quicker to chill food 

This tall model comes with a hanging bottle shelf, salad box, and a Vita-Fresh chiller compartment that sits at around 1°C to provide a super-cooled home for foods such as fresh meat or fish.

Audible alarms will alert you if the doors are inadvertently left open and its doors can open in either direction to help you fit this appliance into your kitchen layout.

Best broadband deal

This is a particularly attractive fibre broadband deal given the 100Mbps average speed. 

Now Broadband implements ad-hoc price increases, in July products increased by £3.50 (social tariffs were excluded from the price rise).

Breasley Select Plus Memory 1000 Pocket

We like: It's not too warm to lie on, it has a removable machine-washable cover

We don't like: It's bouncy, no sleep trial

Exclusive to online retailer MattressNextDay, the Breasley Select Plus Memory 1000 pocket is a pretty popular mattress on the Which? website.

This already cheaper-than-average pocket-sprung mattress is on offer for £229. MattressNextDay says this is a £90 saving off full price. We've seen it on offer before for cheaper, but this is still a good deal.

It's described as medium-firm but in our independent tests it was rated 7.2 on a scale from 1 (very firm) to 10 (very soft).

Best washing machine deal

We like: Efficient water usage

We don't like: The controls can be fiddly

This LG washing machine's large 11kg capacity makes it especially well-suited to larger households.

Its list of features is pretty extensive, such as LG’s ezDispense technology that holds up to 35 doses of detergent and releases the appropriate amount with each wash.

There’s also an Allergy Care cycle that’s aimed at reducing dust mite allergens and an automatic sensor in the machine that will run the optimal wash pattern based on the weight and softness of your clothes.

Best vacuum cleaner deal

Shark Stratos IZ400UKT

We like: It's easy to use

We don't like: It's fairly noisy

A cordless Shark vacuum cleaner aimed at pet owners. It’s equipped with ‘Anti Hair Wrap Plus’ which removes long, short and pet hair from the brush-roll as you clean, according to Shark.

Its ‘Clean Sense IQ’ automatically senses the invisible dirt and adjusts cleaning power and as with most of the brand’s cordless models, it also comes with LED light in the floorhead to help illuminate small particles of dust and pet hair.

In the box you’ll find a crevice tool, multi-surface tool, pet tool, accessory bag, lithium-Ion battery and a charger.

April sale shopping tips 

Check the Which? website 

As well as telling you which products are best and which are lacking, we’ve also put together a list of the best and worst shops. 

We’ve quizzed thousands of Which? members on their experiences of shopping in some of the country’s best-known stores and websites, as well as with lesser-known brands. 

After crunching the numbers, we can reveal which retailers score highly for product quality, range and value for money. To see the retailers that impressed in our latest shopping survey, head to our extensive guide on the best and worst shops.

Watch out for sneaky tricks

Some retailers use underhand tactics to pressure you into making a purchase. 

These include anchor pricing (when products are on sale more often than they aren’t), pressure selling (‘30 people are viewing this right now!’) and dubious claims about the ‘before’ price of a product. 

If you’re unsure how good a deal is, use a tool such as PriceRunner to compare prices across retailers. 

Research customer reviews

It’s always a good idea to read reviews before you buy a product, but not all reviews are trustworthy. 

Some sellers incentivise people to post fake positive reviews to drown out genuine negative ones. If you’re in any doubt, check our expert guide on how to spot a fake review. 

Returning goods

Whether you bought a product in-store or online, you still have rights under the Consumer Contract Regulations. 

The regulations give you a 14-day window to return a non-faulty product, which begins on the day you receive your goods. Many retailers will give you longer than this, but it’s always best to check before you buy.
